Bellflower-Based Pest Control Company Raises Over $26k to Exterminate Cancer

For Immediate Release Bellflower-Based Pest Control Company Raises Over $26k to Exterminate Cancer

Bolstered by an owner’s ongoing battle with cancer,  the Relay for Life team sponsored by Admiral Pest Control raised over $26,000 for the American Cancer Society last month. They hope to exterminate not only bugs, but the all-too-common pest of cancer.

Los Angeles, CA -- July 18, 2012 -- Being an owner of a successful pest control company has challenges, but Jeff Jones has an additional anxiety that eats up his time and energy—cancer. After being diagnosed in 2006, Jones and his team at Admiral Pest Control, decided to fight the awful pest. This year they raised over $26,000 to fight the too-common pest. Jones personally raised over $13,000.

Jeff Jones is vice president of Admiral Pest Control, a company that has been in Jeff’s family since 1947. Along with his brother Brian, Jeff runs the day-to-day operations of the company their grandfather founded 65 years ago.

Six years ago Jeff woke up one morning and found a lump on his shoulder the size of a baseball, which literally grew overnight. He immediately went to the doctor, and an MRI revealed he had soft tissue sarcoma, a rare form of cancer. Fortunately, it was treatable.

Unfortunately, Jones lost most of the muscles from his right arm. He was told he wouldn’t be able to use his right arm again and that he had a 50/50 chance of living beyond five years. Six years later he uses his right hand just fine. There have been setbacks though. His cancer has returned three times. It recently returned and this August he will find out if doctors will be able to save his arm. Despite this, he continues to be a trusted and dependable leader at Admiral Pest Control, as well as a loving husband and father of four.

The unexpected journey gave Jeff, his family, and co-workers a new appreciation for what cancer victims go through. Admiral Pest Control decided they wanted to join the cause to help rid the world of a different kind of pest: cancer. So they formed Team Admiral and joined Relay for Life, a global event that helps communities fundraise to fight cancer. In their first year of participation Team Admiral raised $11,500, which won them recognition that year as the newest team to raise the most money. (for perspective, consider that the entire city of Bellflower raised $60,000 that year, which means Team Admiral contributed almost 20% of the total.)

Top fundraiser, employee Ron Heath, got 30% of his customers to donate. “It makes me feel good to help,” he said. A termite inspector at Admiral Pest Control since 1998, Ron says, “I like working here. The benefits are good, and they keep the equipment up to date. But more importantly, you’re treated well here. It’s a family-run business that cares about its people.  When Jeff got sick I wanted to do something to give back.”

The experience was so positive and fulfilling that Team Admiral has participated in Relay for Life annually for the past five years. This year Team Admiral not only met their goal of raising $15,000, they surpassed it by raising over $26,000 to help fight the disease.

No matter what happens, the family-owned pest control company is determined to fight hard to “exterminate” cancer once and for all—one donation dollar at a time.
